Access Bank list 346 branches to shut down over COVID-19 effect

One of the leading commercial in Nigeria, Access Bank Plc, has listed 346 of its branches nationwide to be shutdown.

The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, who made it known in video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff, said the decision is in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.

Herbert Wigwe further explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.

The CEO noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services.

“This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide. We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers,” the GMD said in the video.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its pain to staff.

“We have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago concerning cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 per cent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees.

They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it can cushion the effect of the pandemic.

However, the CBN, in a statement issued on Sunday evening, revealed the decision was taken after a special meeting of the Bankers’ Committee.

Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okoroafor, who made the statement known, said no sack of either permanent or Adhoc staff can be carried out by any bank without the approval of the regulator.

The statement reads: “A special meeting of the Bankers’ Committee was convened on May 2, 2020, to further review the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Nigerian banking industry.

“The Committee particularly deliberated on the issue of the operating costs of banks given the disruptions emanating from the global economic difficulties and decided as follows:

“To help minimise and mitigate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on families and livelihoods, no bank in Nigeria shall retrench or lay-off any staff of any cadre (including full-time and part-time).

“To give effect to the above measure, the express approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria shall be required if it becomes necessary to lay-off any such staff.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria solicits the support of all in our collective effort to weather through the economic challenge occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
