The President of the Republic of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, has died today, the 9th day of June 2020, from a heart attack.
Burundi’s government says, via a post on its official Twitter handle, that her President, aged 55, died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The tweet reads: “The Government of the Republic of Burundi, announces with great sadness the unexpected death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, following heart failure on June 8, 2020.”
President Nkurunziza, was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him proved abortive.
The President, who will be due to step down from the presidency in August 2020, has been the president of Burundi for 15 years and was a dictator.
However, there are speculations that he died of COVID-19.
The First Lady and his wife Denise, was airlifted to Nairobi 10 days ago, fighting for her life and reportedly ill with coronavirus, leading some to speculate Nkurunziza too might have been infected.
